Setting Defaults Problem

H

Howard H

While this may be heretical in this newsgroup; I use Firefox and
Thunderbird. I have run into a problem setting them as the defaults. I
run XP pro Sp2.

First Problem:
When I go to Set Program Access and Defaults|Custom and try to set TB as
the default browser; I get an error that XP can not find the TB 1.5
uninstall.

The error is:
0:Uninstall log folder not found:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla
Thunderbird\1.5(en-US)\Uninstall\Uninstall Log Folder.

The interesting part about this is that the uninstall directory is right
where it belongs under the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\uninstall\

When I check in the Registry, I find that the Uninstall Log Folder
string is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Mozilla
Thunderbird\1.5.0.4(en-US)\Uninstall\

Since I have installed TB v1.5.0.4 that would make sense.

Second Problem:
When I go to Set Program Access and Defaults|Custom and try to set FF as
the default browser, all seems to go just fine when I click O.K.; but it
does not stick. When I go back to Custom, the radio button is reset to
"Use my current Web browser".

Operationally, this isn't a real big deal; but it is a bit of a thorn
under the saddle so to speak.

Is there something I can do to resolve this issue or do I simply have to
live with this OS "feature"?
Thanks,
Howard

Howard,
The only "heretical" in your question is the fact, that there are support
groups for both Firefox and Thunderbird.

news://mozilla.support.firefox
news://mozilla.support.thunderbird

which can be accessed at (open server)

However, try uninstalling Thunderbird and then reinstall it. Then open
Outlook Express (if you still have it) and make it the default mail client.
Close OE and open Thunderbird. It will ask you if you want to make *it* the
default mail client, and you select yes. Seems rather obvious, but it will
often work.

As for your Firefox problem, try the same process, or have a look at this
freeware program:
SetBrowser
http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/setbrowser/

HTH :)

Howard,

Workaround for problem 1: You may use the following command-line from
Start/Run to set Mozilla Thunderbird as the default client.

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla
Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -silent -nosplash -setDefaultMail

The "Set Program Access and Defaults" method simply executes the above
command line.

The 2nd problem you've listed, is perfectly normal. If the default browser
setting works as configured (Firefox), then simply ignore the issue.

Thanks,
There is one snag in the suggestion. XP does not (as all prior versions
of MS OS's) recognize command line strings with spaces. Is there a
workaround for that?

It does work fine, Howard. Just enclose the long file name paths within
double-quotes.
