SET UP TO DUAL BOOT XP AND XP

Is it possible to create a dual-boot system with both systems being Windows
XP Professional? I currently boot XP from my C: drive. I have installed a
second hard drive and I would like to make it bootable (same version of XP)
so that if something happens to my C: drive I can still run my system. XP
came installed on my Dell system, and all I have is the Reinstallation CD.
Does Microsoft permit a second installation on single system, or would I have
to have a second license? Where can I find instructions for doing this?

Please read your Windows XP End User License Agreement.
Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Direct quote from the EULA:

1. GRANT OF LICENSE.
Microsoft grants you the following rights provided that
you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single
computer.....

A second installation of Windows XP, installed on the same
computer, requires the purchase of a second Windows XP
license. Once you purchase your new license, boot from the
Windows XP CD and select the target drive of the installation.
Windows XP will automatically create a dual-boot loader.

Note: You cannot purchase a second Dell license for Windows XP,
so you'll have to purchase a conventional version. Example:

Thanks, Carey. I guess it wasn't as good an idea as I thought. I was
hopping that the second copy would be allowed as a "backup" since I would
actually only be running one copy. Too bad, but it's certainly not worth the
cost of another copy of XP.

But there is nothing that says you cannot "ghost" your master HD to a slave
HD and then remove it for safekeeping.
There are a few programs out there that will do this.Do a Google

What you want to do is to make a clone of your XP partition on
the 2nd hard drive. The clone WinXP will NOT need any
activivation to work because it will not even know that it is a
clone. Just search in Google for "cloning" or "multi-booting" or
"multiboot WinXP", etc. There are thousands of postings
(mine are best ) to help you. There are also many copy
utilities to do the job - the best probably being Acronis' True Image,
best-rated by the PC consumer magazines. You can also find
free cloning utilities that are downloadable.

All you have to do is to set up a clone on the 2nd HD, and with
one additional entry in the boot.ini file on the 1st HD you'll be
able to boot to either of the WinXPs using WinXP's built-in
multiboot manager.
