Not sure this is right newsgroup but this is the situation. (1) Getting new
PC with Firewall & Antivirus already on PC. Can I then hook up PC with cable
modem and then I'm kind of free from a virus etc? OR (2) New PC with
programs on CD and ready to be installed. Am I to assume that I should put
programs on PC before hooking up cable modem?
Certainly appreciate any advice. Thank you

BEFORE letting your computer connect to the internet, turn ON the Windows
firewall or install your own if you have one, and install your antivirus
and spyware applications. Once those are installed, after the requisite
Restarts, go online and IMMEDIATELY get any updates that may be available.
THEN you're ready to set up your email, etc.. As soon as everything is
updated, run complete scans with each program.

Adding to Pop` Advice try to install the Anti-virus First and the Firewall
before connecting to the Internet.
For Free AVs look here:
http://www.avast.com for Home user Only I think it is Ver4
AVG Free Advisor: AVG Anti-Virus Free:

If you need a robust Firewall more than WindowsMS try Zonealarm.

Good Luck
