Set up on Mail not working

G

GmaKit

I tried to set up my mail system, but keep having problems. I am unable to
send or receive.

I finally downloaded the Windows Live as it was recommended in the help
section.
(FYI - I am running Vista Ultimate and would like my Gmail account to be
fed into Windows Mail). Anyway, the help section said it would take care of
all my errors and problems for me by setting up my account for me when I
downloaded Windows Live. Good deal, huh? Didn't work though. When I open
Windows Mail I immediately get the following error messages:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'INVITE:

You do not have your account setup correctly. In the Advanced section of the account properties, change the smtp port to 465 (not the default 25) Check the box for SSL in both the smtp and pop ports. The pop port should also be 995 (not the default 110).

Thanks Dave and Richard,

I have updated the settings as you suggested. I am not able to send, but
don't seem to be receiving yet. I've hit SEND/RECIEVE a few times and this
does appear to be successful but nothing comes in. I did receive messages
in my Gmail account however.

Yes, that account definitely appears to be enabled for POP.
When you click Send/Receive, does it appear to go though the motions
of contacting the server? Does it respond with a status message of
"No new messages" in the lower right corner?
Make sure the account is enabled for checking:
Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties. On the General tab
make sure "Include this account..." is checked.
