Set up IPP Printer

I have a Hawking print server that supports IPP to print via the
internet. I went into my router settings and enabled DMZ to make the
IP address of the print server accessible to the internet. I can now
ping the IP address and access the print server's utilities over the
internet using the IP address. However, when I try to add a network
printer via Windows XP, I get an error that says "Windows cannot
connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly,
or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." I
followed the instructions in the Hawking manual and entered
"http://123.456.7.8/lpt1:631" in the URL within the add printer wizard.
What am I doing wrong?

I bet your going to be running out of paper now that everyone in the world
knows the ip address.

I'm not that stupid, Gary. The IP address is fake. Do you have any
insight into the problem?

You need to specify the internal IP adresse (192.168.xxx.xxx / 10.xxx.xxx.xx)
of the printer, not the Internet IP address of the router.

BTW: The printer should never be on the DMZ port, since you will run out of
paper once someone find your correct IP address.

Thanks for the reply. I was a little hesitant to put anything on the
DMZ port, and maybe I don't have to. The reason I was going that route
is because I have two routers. Router 1 has an input directly from my
cable modem. That router outputs to a few computers as well as to
router 2. Router 2 has two computers attached to it. The computers
attached to router 1 can see the print server (which is also plugged
into router 1), but the computers attached to router 2 cannot print. I
assume it's because the gateway is different. I had an extra router
lying around which is why I set it up this way rather than using a
switch or hub. I am a computer professional, but I'm a programmer and
networking is definitely my weakness, so I may just be missing
something obvious. I thought I would use IPP to make the computers
that are plugged into router 2 be able to print to the printer, but
maybe that's not the best solution to the problem. What do you think?

Are you setting it up to print to the print server
Or are you setting it up to print to the ip address of the printer.

If you are trying the print server it will not work you have to set it up to
print to a ip address.

I've tried it both ways. The print server has a utility program that
allows you to set up a port and then you can just print to the print
server port. The utility is unable to detect the print server on the
computers plugged into router 2. I was trying to set up IPP so I could
use the IP address. Is there a way to do that without using IPP?
Also, is there some firewall seting in the routers that I need so
computers on router 2 can see the print server that's plugged into
router 1? I added some firewall rules for the IP range, but it didn't
help.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it!

Router connect computer on different networks. You must configure your
router interface with the correct WAN and LAN configurations to connect to a
different network which is what the print server is on.

The easiest way to share that print server, would be to configure the router
as a switch.

Routers can be used as switches by turning off dhcp and assigning it a
static IP address to match the addressing used on the other network.
Configure the computers to automatically obtain PI addresses or if then are
already configured, then run a PI release and renew command to get addresses
from your other router. You should be able to print from the computer after
running Add printer in windows.

Go to printers
Setup a new printer (local)
Add new port
Tcp IP with address of the printer

This should work

I actually found a switch I had lying around and swapped out router 2
with the switch. It's now on the same gateway, so all is good. Thank
you all for your suggestions!
