Hi
I would like to set-up a home network between my desktop and laptop
I'm using a Netgear wireless router
The PC is wired & the laptop is wireless
Using WINXP Home

Could someone help me get this sorted please
I did a google search, but with so many answers I ended up going round
in circles

If I understand it properly, with networking I should be able to
share, copy and swop files between PC & laptop & the laptop should be
able to send files to the printer which is connected to the PC ??

Yes, that's correct. Read here for info on how to set this up:

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

I have exactly the same setup. There is no reason to get Windows
Networking involved.

The router is your "server". Just connect the PC and laptop to the router
and they should automatically see each other via My Network Places / Entire
Network / Microsoft Windows Network. On the PC, set folders and printers to
shared. You're done!

For security, be sure to WEP-enable the wireless link.

Hi Nigel

I had tried this befiore and in My Network Places / Entire
Network / Microsoft Windows Network there is a folder called Mshome
which is not accessible (you do not have permission to use this
network resourse). I've tried to remove it but it just throws up
errors. Do you know of a way to remove it so that I can start again?

How do I WEP-enable the wireless link ?

That's the name of the Workgroup - are both your machines members of this
Workgroup? (Run the New network Wizard in My network Places on both
machines while connected to the router)

which is not accessible (you do not have permission to use this
network resourse).

If using Pro, are both guest accounts turned OFF, have you enabled printer
and file sharing on each machine, and has each machine got IDENTICAL user
accounts set up?

Hi Gordon
I think I have it set up now with file & printer sharing
I tried to print a file from the laptop, but the printer wasn't there
only ms fax and PDF, do I have to load the printer software into the
laptop?
Where will the shared files be on the laptop, couldn't see them either

Perhaps my sharing set up isn't correct

You have to Add a New printer and select network printer - the wizard will
put the drivers for it onto your laptop from the other machine.

Go to My Network Places and add a network place where your shared folder is.
