Set Autoshape defaults - How?

2000 SP-3 (9.0.6620)
Having set the place holder formats the way I like them, how do I make it so
that subsequently created slides will have the same settings for the
placeholder, e.g. Fill Color, Line Color, etc.? I right click on it and choose
"Set AutoShape Defaults" but this has no effect, so that must not be the way to
go.

Go to the View menu and choose Master and Slide Master. Make your changes
there. That should impact the settings for the placeholders on future
slides.
