Not enough information to give you focused help.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

thanks malke, i bought my comp a few months ago and started getting windows
installer is not installed or configured properly error message.I took it
back to the shop and the guy said that someone had tried to load windows xp
again, he fixed it but was trying to charge me. When i got it home i realised
there is now two volumes on it both xp home edition one which works and the
other won't let me access internet, help, add remove programmes and has the
error message windows defender 0x800...ba service failed to start see how to
start a service manualy. When i looked into this i noticed that all the
services were stopped (except main one's which have yes beside them) and
using my usb stick i have scanned this volume with avg free avast free norton
super anti spyware malware bytes a sqaured free spyware doctor and spyware
terminator and all scans are now saying that the volume is clean. I thought
that this volume was conflicting with the one that works ok and had to
download windows intaller 4.1 redistributeable so now that i don't know how
to get the services started i would like to remove this volume as it is quite
annoying and wondered if it was safe to do so and how? i couldn't access the
elephantboy site but thank you!

Elephant Boy was down for a few hours yesterday. It is up now.

Your post is quite hard to read. Stream of consciousness without any
capitalization doesn't work for me. I'm not saying this to hurt your
feelings; just trying to get you the help you apparently want.

Skimming over it, I get that you took it somewhere to someone who didn't
know what he was doing. The computer is now in a mess. I very much doubt it
can be untangled via newsgroup postings. Take it to someone else, someone
who is actually competent. I don't suggest using a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place unless you have no other choice.

Good luck and I'm sorry I was unable to help you,

Malke
