Hi there,
We have a customer who had many viruses/spyware, most noteably smitfraud,
which we removed using a large combo of escan, adaware, spybot, ewido, hijack
this, etc. The system is "clean" However there are some lingering issues.
I noticed that the cut, copy, paste options were greyed out and unselectable.
While trying to fix this, I noticed many of the common windows services were
not available, like windows installer, system restore, cryptographic service,
etc. Many, Many services were unavailable. They weren't necessarily
disabled, but just haven't started and can't be started. If I try to start
it I get the following: "Could not start the windows installer service on
local computer" (or something like that depending on the service I try to
start.) It also tosses up this error: Error 1068: The Dependency service
or group failed to start." Now, I fear that the smitfraud has done something
to the registry that is preventing these services and other from starting up
at windows logon. (This is Win XP Home SP2, BTW). Anyway, if any of you
have a clue out here how to get these services re-registered, that would be
great. Thanks.
