Services failing during startup

I am running XP SP2 on a Dell Latitude laptop. My machine was working
fine until early March.

I have two problems, they may be connected:

1) My "My Documents" folder is set up on a network server instead of
on my C drive. I can not change it in the Target screen, because that
screen is read-only for me, even though I am an administrator on this
machine.
When I login, I get a message saying
---
\\servername\My Documents\Desktop is not accessible. You might not
have permissions to uses this network resource. Contact your
administrator...etc.
No network provider accepted the given network path.
---

(Replace servername with my actual domain server name.) After about a
minute, usually, my desktop icons do appear, and everything works
normally. This is annoying, but acceptable. But it may be related to
this next problem.

2) I get two services that fail. I have Visual Studio installed, so
they pop up as unhandled exceptions, but they just show that there is
a problem in svchost. Near as I can tell, the two that get errors are
Automatic Updates and Workstation, but it could be 2 services that
those depend on. Anyhow, the following services are then usually not
running, and I need to go in manually to start them:
- Windows Time
- Windows Audio
- Automatic Updates
- HID Input Service
- Workstation
- Themes

Sometimes one or more of these services is running, but usually they
are all stopped. When I start them up manually, most of them work
fine, and everything is okay after that, until the next time I need to
reboot. However, Automatic Updates will always generate the exception
error, and I can never get it to work. Even trying to go to the
Windows Update website generates that error for me, and usually that
kills one or more of the other services in the process.

I have tried re-installing SP2 and doing a system restore back to
January, but these problems remain. Any ideas?

What happens if you replace \\servername with the IP of the server?

Are these services set as Automatic for the stratup type?
Is "Automatic Live Update Scheduler" started and set to Automatic as well?

Check any firewall logs to see if it's blocking anything.

Check the event viewer for any errors.
Click Start > Run, type in: eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
To see details for a event error double click on the error listed.
Follow any link provided with the detials for a "possible" solution.
