Since I switched from NIS to ZA I get certain alerts like "Do you want
Services and Controller app to accept connections from the internet. Source
IP: 216.148.227.68:DNS. Application: Services.exe."

Could someone tell me what this is and, even better, tell me where I could
go to research these
kinds of things myself?

Services.exe

(Microsoft)
Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003 only. This is the Services
Control Manager which is responsible for starting,
stopping, and interacting with system services.

Recommendation :
An integral part of the operating system, leave alone.
