SERVICES.EXE terminated unexpectedly with status code 128

On a system with Windows 2000 Advanced Server we get randomly the following
error on one of the two nodes:

"The system process C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SERVICES.EXE terminated unexpectedly
with status code 128. The system will shut down and restart."

The problem seems to be different from the KB-articles KB315105, KB318447
and KB817298 due to the system configuration (Windows 2000 Advanced Server
with SP3).

The reboot of one node occasionaly causes the same error on the other node.
 
It seems to be that the cluster was the victim of an attack via the
LAN-connection.
After installing Hotfix KB899588 the problem disappears.
