2000 Pro status code

This is an older laptop with 2000 Pro installed. During
the boot you get the error "The system process
c:\windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly
with status code 128." The system will now shutdown and
restart. I checked the Microsoft knowlege base and found
status code 128 but it only applies to 2000 server. I
have tried to boot into safe mode and get the same error

- Try booting into the Recovery Console and restoring the System registry
hive from backup.
