Services and Controller App problem

I recently blew out my laptop and reinstalled XP SP1a. I
then installed SP2 before ever putting it on the network.
After installing specific drivers for the laptop, I went
out and did an MS automatic update. All patched up. I
then installed my AV software, everything was going swell
(for about a day). Now, I'm getting a very sporatic error
message, "Services & Controller App has encountered a
problem and needs to close". After clicking either send
or don't send to MS- I get this message...
The system process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe'
terminated
unexpectedly with status code -1. The system will now
shut down and restart.
I then get the infamous 60 second countdown. I've done my
research, and from all indications, it seems to point
back to the Sasser virus. Wasn't this taken care of in
SP2??
Anyway....I downloaded and installed Microsoft's new
malicious software removal tool
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;890830 Nothing. I ran it online....same results.
There appears to be no rhyme or reason for this error.
Everything works great throughout the day- with the
exception of maybe two of these errors.
Any replies or suggestions would be appreciated.

To be honest, that's not a good way to install XP. Installing SP2 after
installing XP doesn't seem to work too well. If you slipstream the service
pack to the CD, then install, there is less problems. Here is a suggestion:

Download the service pack and all hotfixes and save the files to a folder.
Then, slipstream the whole lot to a new XP CD. Then use that to install in
the future. Not only will installation be quicker, but the result will be
more stable.

Look up slip streaming on Google. There are many walk-throughs to help you
do it.

As a note: Perhaps you should have done the anti-virus update and scan
BEFORE anything else. Whilst you were busy doing Windows updates, something
must of slipped in. The best order is: Install XP, update drivers (from a CD
previously virus scanned), update virus definitions, scan for viruses,
Windows updates.

If you're going to use the internet for anything before checking for
viruses, you're tempting fate. Your virus app can do an update without using
Internet Explorer, so it should be ok.

Lindsay, you need to quote the message you're referring to.
