I am trying to download and install the latest service
pack one, but whenever the installation begins, windows
reports that the file "atapi.sys" is being used and cannot
be accessed..
I have closed all other applications down and I have even
attempted to download the service pack to download while
offline with no luck at all, I beleibe the atapi file has
got something to do with cd drives..
Please help me, I really need this fix to resolve many
problems.

Rename the atapi.sys to atapi.bak then try. HTH
.
You can't rename a file which is in use.. i've already
tried closing all apps down.

rambled on in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general:

you can if you boot off the xp cd and goto console.

i apolgise, I thought I said thank you for your help but I must have forgot..
Your method did in fact work for me easily, only I couldn't rename the file
so I just downloaded a new atapi.sys and renamed that... then deleted the
original atap.sys and moved atapi.bak into the same folder..
I don't know why it was unable to rename the file but ok to delete it , but
this worked, thanks a lot for your help: )
