When trying to install SP2 & 3 i get an error response that the system cannot
locate proplus.msi ...

How do I find this file or work round the response?

Perhaps you can help me. I have XP Pro, I have downloaded the file
xpsp1a_en_x86.exe and when I run it it just seems to unpack to a
directory that is subsequently deletes. How does one actually install
sp1a?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

proplus.msi is a microsoft office file. It would be on your office CD. Put
your office cd in your drive and point the installation to it.

I answered your question in another group - but for your advantage and the
many who may be searching for this answer some time in the future...

First - why Service Pack 1a instead of Windows XP Service Pack 2?
After all - it's not supported any longer:

To download the proper file:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

You need to have enough space to unpack AND install the service pack.
For more information on what to expect:

However - I suggest you download and install Service Pack 2.
