Hi

Depending on how you installed SP2 there should an option to revert to SP1 in Add/Remove programs.

When I installed SP2 beta, the "back-up previous SP" is
selected by default, I can also see that in the Windows
directory under "$NtServicePackUninstall$ is a bunch of
files (looks like the previous SP)
Any advice?

Hi

Yes the backup are files kept by default, so there should be an option to revert to the previous version of Windows that you had installed via Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Make sure that you have 'Show Updates' enabled in Add/Remove Programs, then you should see the reference to SP2. Don't try and uninstall SP2 via the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folders.

Will Denny,

I have a similiar problem (not Svc pk 2 though) - can you give me any hints?
-----
3 days ago, I updated XP after being reminded by Automatic Windows Update.
Since then I have had problems. (Vversion is 5.1 Build 2600.xpsp2
030422-1633: Service Pack 1) - in addition to the XP update, I did an Office
XP update.

Programs that used to work crash in the beginning with a message - "This
program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a
virus. Please reinstall it." The program has been reinstalled & works in
another machine, not just this one. Also, another program which
'automated' MS-Word (i.e. programmatically created a Word document) - no
longer works, i.e. Word does not start up with a message Server busy. - Word
starts up fine as a standalone program.

What can I do? I thought I could "undo" the XP update, but there is no
corresponding entry in Add/Remove programs for the 'critical updates' - the
ones that seem to have triggered the problem.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated - othewise I am looking up 2 - 4 days
of Backup, Reinstall Windows / all the applications, then the data etc..

-----

You're welcome Brian.

Dear Will Denny,

The Updates were (from my Windows Update Installation history)-
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)
Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB837001)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)
-
I also updated MS Office XP at the same time - only I do not know how to
find which updates I did
Subsequently (as part of desparate measures), I downloaded and installed (on
mu own this time, as opposed to being reminded by Windows Update)
Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)
Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)

I looked into the list of items in Add/Remove programs, I did not find all
the above items & did not want to do anything till I knew a bit more &
hence this request in the forum.

Yes - I can see the folders & the spuninst folder as well & the

don't if can (or need to) get the time of install)?

| | I have a similiar problem (not Svc pk 2 though) - can you give me any
| hints?
| | -----
| | 3 days ago, I updated XP after being reminded by Automatic Windows
Update.
| | Since then I have had problems. (Vversion is 5.1 Build 2600.xpsp2
| | 030422-1633: Service Pack 1) - in addition to the XP update, I did an
| Office
| | XP update.
| |
| | Programs that used to work crash in the beginning with a message - "This
| | program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or
a
| | virus. Please reinstall it." The program has been reinstalled & works
in
| | another machine, not just this one. Also, another program which
| | 'automated' MS-Word (i.e. programmatically created a Word document) - no
| | longer works, i.e. Word does not start up with a message Server busy. -
| Word
| | starts up fine as a standalone program.
| |
| | What can I do? I thought I could "undo" the XP update, but there is no
| | corresponding entry in Add/Remove programs for the 'critical updates' -
| the
| | ones that seem to have triggered the problem.
| |
| | Any help will be sincerely appreciated - othewise I am looking up 2 - 4
| days
| | of Backup, Reinstall Windows / all the applications, then the data etc..

Hi

You need to associate the number of the Update with the same numbered folder. i.e. KB837009 will be in the $NtUninstallKB837009$ folder.

| Yes - I can see the folders & the spuninst folder as well & the
| spuninst.exe. Do I just go through these - in the reverse date order (I
| don't if can (or need to) get the time of install)?
|
|
| | Hi
|
| If you want uninstall those Updates and they are not listed in Add/Remove
| Programs, look in the Windows folder for the spuninst subfolder of the
| appropriate $NtUninstall*$ folder.

Got it!
I was thinking that among the ones I updated recently (after finding the
right folder based on the number) - is there a reverse date order? Also,
some of them have a spuninst.bat & some an spuninst.exe, which one do I use?

Thanks a lot for the advice - hopefully this will fix the problem

Hi

Try the .exe files. I think that the order of installation in Windows Explorer will depend a lot on which 'View' you are using.

Will Denny,

I also noted that there are no folders for some of the updates -
specifically
Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB837009)

Hi

You need to associate the number of the Update with the same numbered
folder.

|
|
|

| | Security Update for Windows XP (KB837001)

| | | | | Will Denny,

| | | -----
| | | 3 days ago, I updated XP after being reminded by Automatic Windows
| Update.
| | | Since then I have had problems. (Vversion is 5.1 Build 2600.xpsp2
| | | 030422-1633: Service Pack 1) - in addition to the XP update, I did an
| | Office
| | | XP update.
| | |
| | | Programs that used to work crash in the beginning with a message -
"This
| | | program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive
or
| a
| | | virus. Please reinstall it." The program has been reinstalled & works
| in
| | | another machine, not just this one. Also, another program which
| | | 'automated' MS-Word (i.e. programmatically created a Word document) -
no
| | | longer works, i.e. Word does not start up with a message Server
busy. -
| | Word
| | | starts up fine as a standalone program.
| | |
| | | What can I do? I thought I could "undo" the XP update, but there is
no
| | | corresponding entry in Add/Remove programs for the 'critical
updates' -
| | the
| | | ones that seem to have triggered the problem.
| | |
| | | Any help will be sincerely appreciated - othewise I am looking up 2 -

| Thank you - I have undone these changes - any light you can shed on the
| Office Updates?
|
|
| | Hi
|
| KB837009 could be in Add/Remove Programs under 'Outlook Express Q837009' and
| KB831167 could be in Add/Remove Programs under 'Internet Explorer Q831167'.

|
|
| | | Will Denny,
| |
| | I also noted that there are no folders for some of the updates -
| | specifically
| | Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167
| | Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
| | (KB837009)
| |
| |
| | | | Hi
| |
| | You need to associate the number of the Update with the same numbered
| | folder.

| |
| |
| | |
| | |
| | | | | | Hi
| | |
| | | If you want uninstall those Updates and they are not listed in
| Add/Remove
| | | Programs, look in the Windows folder for the spuninst subfolder of the
| | | appropriate $NtUninstall*$ folder.

| | |
| | | | | | | Dear Will Denny,
| | | |
| | | | The Updates were (from my Windows Update Installation history)-
| | | | Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
| | (KB837009)
| | | | Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167)
| | | | Security Update for Windows XP (KB837001)
| | | | Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741)
| | | | Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)
| | | | -
| | | | I also updated MS Office XP at the same time - only I do not know how
| to
| | | | find which updates I did
| | | | Subsequently (as part of desparate measures), I downloaded and
| installed
| | | (on
| | | | mu own this time, as opposed to being reminded by Windows Update)
| | | | Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)
| | | | Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)
| | | |
| | | |
| | | | I looked into the list of items in Add/Remove programs, I did not find
| | all
| | | | the above items & did not want to do anything till I knew a bit more
| &
| | | | hence this request in the forum.

| | | |
| | | | | | | | Hi
| | | |
| | | | Which particular Update was it? You may be able to uninstall it
| another
| | | | way - via its folder in Windows.

| | | |
| | | | | | | | | Will Denny,
| | | | |
| | | | | I have a similiar problem (not Svc pk 2 though) - can you give me
| any
| | | | hints?
| | | | | -----
| | | | | 3 days ago, I updated XP after being reminded by Automatic Windows
| | | Update.
| | | | | Since then I have had problems. (Vversion is 5.1 Build 2600.xpsp2
| | | | | 030422-1633: Service Pack 1) - in addition to the XP update, I did
| an
| | | | Office
| | | | | XP update.
| | | | |
| | | | | Programs that used to work crash in the beginning with a message -
| | "This
| | | | | program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive
| | or
| | | a
| | | | | virus. Please reinstall it." The program has been reinstalled &
| works
| | | in
| | | | | another machine, not just this one. Also, another program which
| | | | | 'automated' MS-Word (i.e. programmatically created a Word
| document) -
| | no
| | | | | longer works, i.e.
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | | | | Any help will be sincerely appreciated - othewise I am looking up
| 2 -
| | 4
| | | | days
| | | | | of Backup, Reinstall Windows / all the applications, then the data
| | etc..
| | | | |
| | | | | -----
| | | | |
| | | | | | | | | | You're welcome Brian.

| | | | | | >Yes the backup are files kept by default, so there
| | | | | | should be an option to revert to the previous version of
| | | | | | Windows that you had installed via Control
| | | | | | Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Make sure that you have 'Show
| | | | | | Updates' enabled in Add/Remove Programs, then you should
| | | | | | see the reference to SP2. Don't try and uninstall SP2
