Service Pack Download problem

I recently allowed MS to scan my computer, running XP Home, to determine what
updates are needed.
The critical Security Pack 1 was advised, then to download all the rest
afterward.

I tried to executeit ... A box appeared that access was denied.
Then another box advising that the Security Pack did not load successfully.

I then downloaded the file to a folder on my drive, closed my internet
connection and all programs. I tried to execute the 'sp1aexpress_usa'
program from there. The installation wizard starts, but then the access
denied box appears again.

How can I solve this problem and get this important update loaded? I know
it addresses certain vulnerabilities with XP to some of the new viruses.

I did have a Blaster infection a couple of days earlier. I went to the
Symantec webpage and found a cleanup program for the W32.Blaster. I
downloaded and used it. My system came up clean. But I worry that it set
some trigger in my config files somewhere that renders my system unable to
download the much-needed security update. I read some descriptions of what
the Blaster does ... among other things it does something about opening a TCP
Port 4444 or something like that in my Firewall and signals for other viruses
to enter through it. Does something with another port, too. Could be ... I
had a W32.Spybot.worm infection yesterday. I found detailed cleaning
instructions on the Symantec site again and cleaned that problem up. Still
cannot get the Security Pack downloaded.

Anybody have the same problem? Any ideas??

Hi Michaelee,
You may want to try looking in the Help and Support \ Windows Update
troubleshhooter section at the Windows Update site and search for your
particular error message there. They ususally have a lot of answers there for
you.

First, the version of the SP1 you saved to disk is only a bootstrap program
that requires internet access in order to get the rest as it starts the
install.

You may have other infection from the sounds of what you have said.

If you wait a couple days, you will be able to go straight to SP2.
In the meantime, turn on the firewall, and check the machine for infections,
spyware, etc..
