Service Pack 4Free - Windows 2000 Professional

When booting into Safe Mode on a Windows 2000 Professional box I see "Service
Pack 4Free" at the top of the screen - something I haven't noticed on other
boxes.

Is this service pack legitimate? I would assume it is, except that I'm
cleaning spyware and viruses off the machine now, so I'm suspicious.

No. That is not legitimate Microsoft Windows 2000 Modus Operandi.
Never ever have I seen SPAM running in legitimate clean Windows 2000
installations, let alone clean installations that boot to Safe-Mode!

Maybe you have installed the so called SP5 on your computer.

I have a w2k sp4 that was provided by the university I attended and it
has the 4free displayed during safe-mode.

I should have booted in safe-mode and verivied instead of jumping to
conclusions. My machine shows the same thing and my service pack was
downloaded from Microsoft, it's legit.

Kind of begs the question of what you get extra in "Service Pack
4YouPayForIt" :)

Thank you all for your help - I'm glad its legit!

"Free" is Microsoft's way of stating that the installed O/S doesn't contain
debuging code.
