Service Pack 4 & Pre SP4 Fixes

LD

Hi all,

I would like to upgrade a Windows 2000 standalone server to a second domain
controller in an existing domain.

Questions as follows.

1) Do I run dcprom straight away or do I have to configure this server to
join the domain first then run dcpromo.
2) This server is currently at SP3 level with a couple of pre-SP4 fixes. If
I apply SP4 after the migration to domain controller,
do I still need to reapply these pre-SP4 fixes.

Thanks.

You must join the server to the domain first.

No, if you apply SP4 after it is promoted to a DC you must then install the
pre-SP5 fixes. ie. from Windows Update.

LD,

I usually suggest that you join a server that is going to be dcpromoed to
the domain but it is not necessary.

I just did something similar in my test lab this weekend. Three servers (
WIN2000 Server ) all in the same workgroup. Did a dcpromo on the first
machine that created the domain / forest. Manually added the third server
to the domain as a Member Server ( for Exchange 2000 ). On the second
server - which was still a member of the workgroup - I ran dcpromo and the
process completed without a hitch. However, I did manually enter the DNS
information in the TCP/IP configuration settings.

The choice is yours. But, like I said I would first join it to the domain.

HTH,

Cary
