Service Pack 3

Derrick Fawsitt

Not having installed Service Pack 2 because of advice given to me by my
PC technician I now notice that one of the Microsoft updates is Service
Pack 3. Does this have the same problems as version 2, should I go ahead
and install it considering my misgivings with version 2, in fact is it
an upgrade to service pack 2 or something completely different.
Finally, I have not updated my MS for a considerable time having
disabled automatic update on account of not wishing to have Service Pack
2, therefore can anyone tell me of any updates I really should now
install, thank you in advance.

Neat, where can I get SP 3. Please post the url for all us dumb folks.

P.S. Your PC technician sounds like a knowledgeable gal. Maybe you could
have her write a column for this newsgroup.

Since you are following the advice of your "PC technician," why don't
you go and ask him/her?

SP3 has nothing whatsoever to do with Windows (as you'd have known had you
bothered to read the description properly) SP3 is for the first release of
the NET Framework.

I don't like what you're saying about women and computers. Care to either
elaborate on - or retract - your remarks...?

Thank you for all your "polite" and "understanding" remarks which were
no doubt meant "help" the likes of me and obviously must be the general
trait of this news group, though I would like to believe that not to be
the case.
I asked my question in all good faith and have got flamed, so be it,
however I hope you enjoy a similar treatment from those you meet with
during the course of your day.
Good Luck.

You should really install SP2 and any subsequent updates! There is NO SP3 as
of yet.

Good Morning,
Let us end this in good faith: First, there is no Service Pack 3 yet
available for the Windows XP operating system. Second, fully update your
system with every critical update available from the Windows update site
including Service Pack 2. Third; I, for one, fully disagree with the advice
given to you by the your PC technician.

I have 14 updates listed under this key...

Hope this helps. Let us know.

What a little sissy you are! Don't want to risk being flamed, then
don't post to the USENET. The art of the flame is much more worthy of
respect in these parts than the likes of you.

No, they represent the two worst offenders in the Newsgroup!
I was shocked to find them teaming up to flame you and believe this is a

No, you are mistaken. There is no Service Pack 3 for Windows XP;
SP2 is the latest. If you are seeing a Service Pack 3 offered,
it's for a different product.

Regarding SP2, the great majority of people have had no problems
with it, and I recommend installing it. Although an occasional
person does have a problem, it's usually because they install it
on a spyware-laden machine. Read
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=45

Also note that, although SP2 gets a lot of press for security
improvements, there's a lot more to it than just that. Read "List
of fixes included in Windows XP Service Pack 2" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811113&Product=windowsxpsp2

Derrick;
There is no SP-3 for Windows XP and if there is to be, do not expect it for
about 1.5 - 2.5 years.
You should probably install all Critical Updates including SP-2 if computer
security is important to you.

Exactly why did the tech say not to install SP-2?
There are a few good reasons, most have to do with specific problems with
hardware or software.
Most of those issues were resolved before the release of SP-2.
Many more have been resolved since.
A competent tech will know and be able to explain in detail.
If your tech can not give detailed reasons, dump that tech and find a
competent tech with your computer security in mind and not laziness.

What specific problems are you referring for SP-2?
Most are nonexistent on a well maintained computer.

Two problems with that. One, if your blocked senders list gets too full, OE
has problems. Two, if the person you want to block changes their email
address, they appear again.

Best thing is just ignore them.

re: the reg key w/ sp3 in its name

these are the hotfixes to SP2, and as-such are SP3 _CANDIDATES_. MS
does use this nomenclature (sp3) for these sort of things. However
there is no SP3 yet. Yeah, it's a bit confusing.

do a kb search on this term to find all fixes since SP2:
kbwinxpsp3fix

as in:

http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?view=en-us&st=b&na=82&qu=kbwinxpsp3fix&swc=3

There are quite a few! ;-)

Try quoting the post you are responding to, just for sh*ts and giggles.

See how your reply doesn't make any effin' sense in the context of the
post you actually replied to, and kinda make you look like some kinda
mental patient, though the "(e-mail address removed)" had already had me
thinking that, and your reply to Alias was just a confirmation of your
mental status.

Derrick; Hi.

I know now, I am so sorry I did not interpret the text correctly in the
MS site, I now know it refers to the Microsoft.NET framework, (whatever
that is, don't tell me), and after that it said Service Pack 3.
You should probably install all Critical Updates including SP-2 if computer
security is important to you.
OK, but in my town there are two schools of thought held by the techs,
those that say that if you install the Service Pack 2 you may have to
reinstall quite a few programmes etc., he is all "doom and gloom" about
it. The other chap says it is essential to install and as quickly as
possible. The chap I had been dealing with up to recently and who built
my PC would not install SP2, he has now given up business, (I hear you
all laugh), unfortunately it is due to a serious illness. My other
chappie will take over my system again and he is an advocate of SP2 so
no doubt he will sort me out.
Exactly why did the tech say not to install SP-2? See above.
There are a few good reasons, most have to do with specific problems with
hardware or software.
But enough to frighten a few of us who don't relish reformatting a hard
drive all over again as I had once before.
Most of those issues were resolved before the release of SP-2.

Thank you so much, I realise that now and I fear I am one of those "left
behind", however I am way ahead in other ways and I cannot be wise to
everything.

I am so grateful to you and the others who have rallied to my help and
support and my faith in human nature is now restored, hallelujah!
Don't be too hard on the "flamers", if they met me in person they would
probably like me, its just they like to hide behind the technology and
fire missiles.
All my thanks again,
