Because WP Service Pack 3 is so large, and I am on dial-up, I downloaded it
at the local library which has broadband. I brought it home on a CD and went
to install it. It refused to unload the files and crashed my computer. What
is going on here. I suspect, knowing Microsoft, that they have put in one of
their 'clever tricks' (to put it politely) because they don't want people
copying their software (perish the thought!). Can anybody explain, please?

Hi Peter,

Did you try copying the file to a location on your hard drive? No
tricks involved. The file could also be corrupt.

Why the slam at MS, they are the ones providing the Service Pack in
the first place ( and yes it fixes their software so forget that comeback ).
There are several things that might have gone wrong. The download
may be corrupted. You can run a Checksum on the downloaded file
to verify that. The burn process may have finished but the disk is not
readable. Did you try to copy the Service Pack from the optical disk
onto your hard drive to verify it's integrity ? Service Packs require an
extraction process to begin the installation process. There are lots of
technical reasons why it may not have worked. Sometimes using a
flash ( Thumb ) drive is better for doing transfer of large files and you
can get a 1-Gigabyte Flash drive for under $10.

spyware /malware programs.Also you shouldnt run any applications during the
installation.
