I'm trying to install Windows XP service pack 2. It seems
like it's working until it says it's creating a break
point, and then it stops. No error message, no cpu usage,
no hard drive usage. I let it sit for 40 mins and then I
cancelled it. After cancelling it I tried to restart the
install and it says it is still running.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Gary

Hi

Some log files you can check for any clues or error messages for the
service pack installation:

%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like a problem with IEXPLORE.EXE. Should I
update IE first?

Thanks,
Gary

Hi

I'm not so sure that is an critical error, but it would not hurt to
do it.

After updating/reinstalling, please enable verbose logging level (see
further down for how) before installing SP2 again.

Also, before installing SP2,rename the two old log files to e.g.:

%windir%\Svcpack.log.old
%windir%\setupapi.log.old

If the installation still hangs or fails, please put both the .old
files as well as the new .log files in a zip file and e-mail it to
me (remove -spam).

Please see the the "Access denied" section here on how to enable
verbose logging level:
