See if this applies to you:

"After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, your computer restarts
continuously"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;873161&Product=winxp

Otherwise, remove SP 2 following these directions:

"How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350&Product=winxp

and

"How to help protect your computer if you decide to remove Windows XP
Service Pack 2"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;878454&Product=winxp

Then follow the instructions here:

"What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

and install SP 2 again.
