Hi, I'm trying to download Adobe Reader but after it
downloads for about 40 minutes, I get the message that
this windows 2000 does not have the necessary service pack
2 that I need to download Adobe. I don't know what that
is. Does anybody know how I can get that.

From the "Run" box
winver
should report the current operating system service pack level (if any)

Service packs for Microsoft systems are issued by Microsoft, and can be
downloaded from the Microsoft website. There are also instructions there
for ordering SPs on CD. A good place to start looking for them is:
<http://support.microsoft.com/>

Service packs are quite large, sometimes dozens of megabytes. They
consist of corrections to system code and occasional new features, and
are free (nominal charge for CDs.)

SPs are issued by number and are cumulative in content. Win2k SP2, for
example, includes everything in SP1 - and sometimes corrections to prior
SP releases. Product developers (like Adobe) may release software that
depends on code released in a system SP; that is what happened to you.

It is generally a good idea to update your system with these SPs. Some
people like to wait a while and let others go first, in case (as
occasionally happens with any complex code) the SP itself may cause
problems.

The most recent W2k SP is #4. It is safe to assume, I think, that
Adobe's product would run successfully with SP2 (as they require) or
witrh SP3 or SP4, which are successively larger, but you might want to
check with Adobe Tech Support that this assumption is correct.
