I get no error messages and I notice the drive light goes out so I check the

How are you attempting the install? Is this from the online update, or did
you download teh 266 meg full SP2 file?

And, what else is running when you update - including antivirus and security
software? All of this should be OFF when installing something like SP2,
because they can easily recognise SP2's legitimate attempt to change system
files as an unauthorized attempt to change system files, and will interfere.

I would suggest one of two approaches, both of with start with downloading
the entire SP2 install file from here:

http://tinyurl.com/5q6hm
which is:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

Save the file locally.

Before you start either method, unplug all accessories that aren't strictly
required - leave only the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Disconnect all
scanners, printers, external drives, etc.

The first approach consists of disabling your security software, then
running the SP2 install from the local file. If you're uncomfortable with
this, disconnect from the internet first - as simple as unplugging the
cable.

The second approach involves slipstreaming the SP2 install to make a new
copy of your XP install CD and then doing a repair install. This won't
work with restore disks or some OEM install CDs. The easiest way to do
it, if it will work, is with Autostreamer:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/Autostreamer.shtml

It's very, very easy to use, as long as you have the SP2 file, a suitable
install CD, enough disk space, and a way to burn an ISO image to a CD at the
end.

Once you have the CD burned, put it in the drive, shut down and reboot from
the CD. You may need to adjust the boot sequence in the BIOS. Carefully
watch the screens to select the *repair* install, which will keep your
registry and installed apps intact, but update the core files to SP2.

I am installing free the CD I got from Microsoft.

If you have the SP2 CD then you may not need the download, as that's what
the CD contains.

However, as to the second approach with the repair install, I've never
slipstreamed with Autostreamer from the CD; if it has more than the one
file, it might be a little different. Copy the contents of the CD to a
folder on the hard disk, put your XP install CD in the drive, and point
Autostreamer to those two locations.

Autostreamer will tell you right away if there's an issue. If it makes it
easier, downloading the SP2 file does work with autostreamer.

It's a good idea to have an updated XP SP2 CD anyway, as a future repair
install will then already have SP2 installed.

But do try rerunning the install after disconnecting all non-essential
hardware and disabling security and A/V software. That may be the problem.
