service pack 2 removal

My computer has just finished downloading the new windows service pack 2. I
have not yet installed it yet. I have decided not to install it at this time
because it is not compatible with some software I am running, and as of yet
there are no updates to fix it. I have heard lots of problems with this
update that people are having. I would like to know if anyone knows where
this downloaded file is stored on my computer? I am running windows xp
professional. I have tried searching for "KB835935-SP2-ENU.EXE" and
"WINDOWSXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.EXE". This is supposed to be the name of the
downloaded file and is about 272 megabytes. The search has come up with
nothing.I even tried searching for "SP2",but nothing either. Everytime I
start my computer the little message appears with " you have new updates to
install". I do not want sp2 installed(or even in my computer at this time)
until some fixes are available for the software that it effects.I can use
help! Mike

What software is incompatible?

If you downloaded via Windows Update, then you won't have that file on your
drive as that's the full network install you've mentioned.

Smart choice. I installed it and found out that some important software I
needed, will no longer run on my computer after the upgrade to SP2.

I removed SP2 (wasted a lot of resources for this), had to update XP with
the hot fixes all over again (more resources), and now I have all kinds of
unexplained behaviors from XP such as error dialogs as soon as the computer
boots which tells me that there is not enough memory (I have 1 gig) to run
16-bit programs. Huh?!

The saddest part, I can no longer log onto some websites where I never had a
problem logging onto.

The update took all night to download( I have dial-up).It must have put
something in my computer if it took that long to download. The file is
supposed to be around 272 megabytes.Everytime I restart my computer,I get a
message telling me that new updates are ready to install.I clicked on it, and
sure enough it informs me that it is the service pack 2 update.I just click
cancel to keep it from installing.Roxio easy cd creator is one program that
will not work with SP2. Roxio just tells you to upgrade to easy media
creator(where is their support?).They will not offer any fixes for SP2.They
want you to buy another one.I have also heard of numerous other problems some
people are having.I have never had any problems before SP2 came along,so I
will wait and maybe install SP2 at a later date.Right now I just want it out
of my computer. Mike

Those are the names for the 'complete' pack, downloaded as a single
266MB file, to somewhere you specified. You should find a download
from Windows Update has come as a collection (somewhere around 80 to
120 MB in all) in a folder under Windows\Downloaded Installations.

Be very careful about using it much later though. If you do other
updates - and particularly should you do a system restore that removes
an update that is installed right now, you could get the assessment of
what you need out of step. I would suggest rather that you delete that
collection and take steps to get one of the free CDs of the whole thing.

Easy cd creator 5 will not work with SP2(so I hear).I am using easy cd
creator 5 platinum.Roxio will not offer any fixes for version 5 at this time
so it is compatible with SP2. Mike

Hi

That is because Windows Updates/Automatic Updates doesn't download
to that folder.

I would think Alex really meant a subfolder here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

I did a search in all files and folders for
"%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and it came up empty.this search
included hidden files & folders.I still have no idea why this download cannot
be located on my computer. It took about 18 hours to download(dial-up) and
when I click on the message that says "you have new updates to install", it
is the service pack 2.So at this point I know the downloaded file is in my
computer somewhere.Yet for some reason this file of about 266 MB cannot be
found in my computer using searches.Any ideas anyone? I also want to thank
everyone for their help! Mike

Did you download the full network version of 266MB or did you use
automatic update which will be much smaller, on the order of 80MB -
120MB. In any event did you try searching by file size? You can't have
too many files that exceed 50MB.
