Service Pack 2 files need to be set to original

I recieved messages this morning that appeared (appeared) to be from
Microsoft indicating some of me service pack 2 files had been corrupted and
needed to replaced with the original files, to put the service pack 2 cd in
the drive and continue. Has any one else seen this issue. Is Microsoft
sending out any thing like this. I also get at the same time an adaware
error to do with notepad.exe.

Yes, I got this today, don't have a clue why. Ran a virus scan, ad-aware,
spybot, and nothing found. I don't even have a CD of SP2, I downloaded all
the critical updates including SP2 like a good little boy, so I don't know
what they are talking about.

The skeptic in me would first ask how MS could possibly know that files on
your specific computer had become corrupted. And then sent you a personal
message. Not very likely.

Now, it's possible that your computer noted corrupted files, but that would
have been an internal message, not something from MS.

So, how did these messages appear, anyway? Email?

Exactly how did you get the messages?
What exactly did the message state?
The answers will tell if the message came from within the computer or from
outside.
If the message came from outside, it is most certainly bogus.
Until you answer as a minimum these questions, no one can give you a
reliable answer.

First the message just appeared on my desktop, no email application was
opened. Several people in my organization got this message. I felt like it
was bogus and told them all to close it and ignore the message. One of my
techs got the message and decided to reinstall the service pack 2, he ended
up having to rebuild his computer. An interesting response was the one about
Panda finding a virus at the same time and it pointing to the notepad.exe.
That also happened to several of the users. I have not seen this again since
my first message. I suspect it was a worm, of some kind. Thanks to all for
your responses.
