Hello everyone :-)

I was asked by a friend to help her with problems connected to serrvice pack
2 download. The system was also showing instability (freezing etc) and she
had received a message saying that the system was unstable as a result of
the download and she needed to uninstall. This seemed a waste as it would
require her to reinstall the whole thing again. I restored machine to a
week before which then showed sp2 as being installed in the add/remove
programs window. I then went to windowsxp update site and ran check on
computer to see if any updates are needed. It came up with download of sp2
of 0kb and 0 minutes!!! What on earth does this mean?? When I authorized
download to begin it started downloading sp2 setup wizard etc. After about
10 minutes I stopped process as I did not want to repeat problem that had
happened in first place. I turned update manager off as well. Can anyone
advise me about this eg. if service pack is listed in add/remove programs
why is windows update site trying to download it again?

I suggest that you do not download SP-2. Instead , get the free CD from
Microsoft. They do not even charge for shipping (unlike SP-1).

As I recall, the link to the CD order form is near the bottom of the
download page.

Personally, after getting a free copy of SP2 at my local Staples store, I wonder why
anyone would want to put it on their machine, particularly if you have a local
network. It's knocked my network for a loop, and I'm still trying to figure out how
to see my other two machines. If you will look at the xp network newsgroup, you'll
see a pretty fair number of problems with people who have gotten their local networks
tangled up after installing SP2. Proceed cautiously.

I have no problems with SP2 here, neither with my network nor
with any other aspect of it.

Whenever *anything* new comes out, you see many posts in the
relevant newsgroups by people who have had problems with it, and
are looking for help with those problems. That's not
surprising--these newsgroups are one of the places people go for
help with their problems. But it's unbalnced view of what
problems exist, because it doesn't represent anywhere near the
entire world of users of SP2. The enormous number of people using
SP2 with no problems at all don't come to the newsgroups to say
that it works fine.

As someone once said, hang around a transmission shop for a while
and you'll think all cars have transmission problems.

I've personally installed SP2 on several machines and I know many
others who have done even more installations than I have. In all
the installations I've seen and know of, done by the range of
people from professional to rank beginners, I'm aware of a single
problem, and that was done on a machine with lots of spyware on
it; doing that *often* results in problems.

As someone might say, hang around a MVP shop for a while
and you'll think no MVP's have problems, or at least that's
the story they have to say.
