Service Pack 2 crashes programs

Has anyone seen the latest problems with patches? The following programs are
now starting to fail:

Norton Antivirus 2005 & 2007
Live Update fails to run
Office Programs can no longer e-mail documents within the program
Microsoft Defender fails to update
Windows Installer fails to start
Cannot install or uninstall programs

I ended up removing Service Pack 2 and all is well again. Everything works.
Now I have problems with windows update. It keeps asking for a file to be
re-installed or registered for Windows update to run properly. I installed it
manually, but update still fails. This is all happening on a fresh install of
XP Pro too.

Article KB909444 helps some, but it's dated 9/22/2006. What I'm looking for
is if anyone else has seen this happen?

50 clients on a Windows 2003 Server domain. This has happened on 5 PC's so
far.

Hi shawndiaz,

Ideally, reinstall the operating system from scratch. Install Windows XP
Service Pack 2 and all Windows patches. Finally install the programs
required including the drivers.

Yes, a new install after a fresh format and the updates fail to install. It
will not update to XP SP2 and it will not install the updates found after a
manual update.

I have Norton A/V 2007, Office and Defender. They all are "still"
working correctly with SP2 and the latest updates. Since you are
talking about a Windows 2003 domain, you need to check the additional
"policies" that might be active on the Windows 2003.

And the odds of the "policies" only affecting 5 clients instead of all 50 is
what? Mine is running just fine too.
