Have just downloaded service pack 1 and installed it, PC just re booted and
its more or less totally wiped everything!!

All the documents in my documents were gone, all the icons for programmes
off my desktop were gone, XP had gone back to the XP theme as opposed to
the classic which ide been using.

whats the deal??? ive done a system restore back to before i installed the
SP1 and everythings back as it was, why did the instalation of SP1 delete
most of my stuff??

thanks

Firewall? Anti-virus? Make sure that before going to EVEN Microsoft's
Windows update site, you have taken these 2 precautions...

Willie;
What precaution?
Firewall should ALWAYS be enabled if there is a connection to any
network including internet.
On the other hand, ALL anti virus components should be DISABLED while
getting and performing updates from Windows Update.
It is not unusual for an AV application to give a false positive
during the update process.

Nothing was deleted otherwise the data would be gone after a System
Restore since System Restore does not restore personal data.

Something must have gone wrong.
Did you have anti virus and all other unnecessary applications
disabled before you started?
Nobody was doing anything or otherwise touching the computer?

Try it this way:

Possibly I was TOO Brief in my "Firewall"- "Anti-Virus"answer. I was merely
"Suggesting" to be sure those were enabled (Did I choose the wrong wording?)
I find it best to not "Assume" everyone knows to take these precautions.
Sorry if I overstepped my "Help" intentions...

But the anti virus should be DISabled during update.
It is not uncommon for a false positive thus a failed install of
Windows Updates because of an anti virus application.

Thanks for clearing that up. My MIStake. I see by the post below this one
that this same person has a "TWO user" issue...hummm, I wonder if the two
issues are related? Thanks again for correcting my statement...Willie
