Is it better to install patches alone instead of the full Service Pack 1?

I have been installing patches from MS and working peacefully (?) until a
few days ago I decided to download and install SP1. Everything went on
smoothly but now, I get a crash every now and then. My antivirus (McAfee
Home Edition 7.0) finds it difficult loading and have to be reloaded from
its .exe or the whole pc has to be started afresh!!
I am now thinking of reinstalling windows but then only with patches and
not the full service pack. Or is it first SP1 and then patches by dates?
Or is this a trade mark of the SP1 (crashes) ?

thanks

maybe need to try that too.
Only tedious work with re installation of windows and all programs again!!

thanks anyway.

SP1 contains many updates which are NOT available seperately, including
quite a few critical security updates. If you are having problems, try
uninstalling the SP (you DID take the backup old files option didn't you)?
and then see if your system is stable.

Once you are happy, disable any firewall or anti-virus software, shut down
any other running applications, and try again. Once complete, check system
stability and THEN apply the post-SP1 updates (there is now an update rollup
available from MS to make this easier). Only once all updates are done
should you re-enable your firewall and antivirus software.

SP1 I think is best - but needs to be loaded from the complete download
(Network version - 130MB) or CD -link at bottom of the page, $10

The express method gets just those patches that *it* takes as being
relevant, and I am not sure it gets it right.

You might well try though is uninstalling McAfee (preferably before
SP1) and then reinstalling it. Or getting another AV package like the
free AVG. McAfee (and Norton) puts tentacles down into the system, and
you may find they are making assumptions about components that are
changed by SP1
