Service Pack 1 or 2?

Sherry

I am using Windows XP Home Edition. When I click on
properties it doesn't say Service Pack 1. Do I need to
update to SP1 before I download SP2? I've gone to
Windows Update and it tells me to download SP2. I tried
installing it but it says it failed to download. Also
comp is configured to take automatic updates daily now
and has an icon in the lower right hand corner showing
0%. I'm new at Windows XP. Thanks!

Hi Sherry,

No, you don't need to install SP1 first. You can download and install the
full package here, rather than relying on Windows Update:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

It's a whopper at 266MB. The Auto-update version (aka the Express version)
will be smaller as it will only download the parts you need. The full
network version contains everything, including all critical updates since
XP's original release, many of which you probably already have.

Consider ordering the free update CD of SP2 and installing from that.
Even the shipping is free, I got a free update CD from them earlier this
year, and I just ordered this one. But I have already installed from online.
To order the free CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Right before you try again to install, best to be safer than sorry.
1) In Internet Explorer, delete "cookies, "temp files", and "history".
2) turn off your antivirus software.
3) disable your 3rd part firewall. So I guess if you are going to try it
online again, make sure you enable XP's built-in firewall after disabling the
3rd party one.
4) problems have been reported because of poorly written ad ware and spyware.
So run Adaware right before too. Run any other anti-spyware programs you
have.

Now install it.

BTW, look in control panel\add-remove to see if you have any SP1 updates
installed. I'll bet you do. You might even see a few that have SP2 in them,
though I was told before that they just had "hooks" for SP2. The Windows
updates will be there with your installed programs. Also, in the past I have
had problems before with trying to do too many updates at one time, so I did
them one at a time, and it worked. But if you are trying just the SP2 update
then there is nothing you can do about that.
