What is the best way to walk up to a server for the first time and
find out what role it plays on a network, i.e. DC, E2K, web etc.
should I look at the services?

I would say taking a peek at the running services and the startup programs
in Computer Management-System Tools-System Information-Software
Environment-Startup Programs.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for posting here.

To find out if it is a DC, you may open the properties of the My computer
on the desktop. You will find out that the Change button is grayed out in
the Computer name tab.

To find out if it is a Exchange server or Web server, you may check if the
Exchange or IIS services are running.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
