Server restarting?

Hi

We're having 'unexpectetly' server restarts. It's strange becase last week server restarted during the day, that happend also today. No error logs, no other errors. Also there were no hardware and software changes made. 'Restarts' happend just sudenly.
In EventViewer I only get the following message: ''The previous system shutdown at 20:04:03 on 28.12.2004 was unexpected''
Server is IBM x225 running Win2k Standard Server. It is a second DC and also a FILE and WEB server.
I checked hardware and it is ok, also no other software sympthoms were found. Any ideas or any tools that I can use to analyze this problem?

Thank you all in advance
Regards
Miha

Deteriorating power or hardware come first to mind.
External power glitches, failing power supply in the
box, failing RAM card, and the like will all cause
instant, trackless powerdowns. Can be difficult
to diagnose.

There have been threads on this subject here in the
last few years, including at least one case
involving a server at Columbia Univ in NYC, where
the cause if I remember correctly turned out to be a
very subtle glitch in the OS software config. A
determined search of the W2k newsgroups might help.

I'm having the same issue with Windows Server 2003 Small Business
Server. I haven't figured it out yet either, but one thing that I came
close on was related to the APC UPS.

I read a document that stated that after putting the server on the UPS
and installing the UPS administration software the server would shut
down. The document suggested that the ups communications cable may be
on the same com port as a modem. The solution was to remove the modem.
I disabled it in the device manager, but the problem still persists.
I'm going to remove the modem altogether tomorrow.

You might try that - hope that helps. If you found a different
solution I'd be interested in hearing (reading) it.

Dell came out and swapped out the motherboard, Power Supply, & Processor
today. Then it shut off again about 4 hours later. :-(
