Server 2003 backup problems

Is it even worth spending much more time playing with the settings?
Personally I think it is very poor but some people rave on about it.

My problem is:

I have schedulled a job that runs Mon-Friday and backs everything up. This
appears to work fine on a new tape but when inserting the used tapes the job
log reports "cannot locate the specified media or backup device". In the
evernt log I noticed that the Removeable Storage service stops and starts at
the time that the backup was schedulled.

I belive that if I use the AT command to schedule the jobs it will work but
there must either be something I'm missing or the GUI backup is rubish.

Any (useful) comments.

The backup on Server 2003 seems flakey at best to me. I set up ongoing nightly
scheduled backups onto a network share, and it would work for a few days then
the scheduling would just stop with no explanation and no error. Going into the
scheduler and the future jobs are still there, but backup "forgets" to run the
jobs. After frustration and getting a MSCE to take a look, the MSCE couldn't
figure out why MS Backup would stop after a few days and not start again. We
went with AlmerBackup Pro from http://www.almersoft.com/ in the end. It has its
own service.

Thanks for the input.
We normally use Veritas but one of our customers is penny pinching and wants
to have the bundled backup used.
