scheduled backup fails

I'm using an SCSI HP Backup Tape drive (AIT-1 70GB) with
the matching HP AIT 70GB tapes on windows XP Professional.

I've schedule a backup task to begin at 7pm each day to
backup critical data in one directory (directory has two
sub directories and many many tiny files under each).

When I manually run the backup job with the settings I've
chosen it runs 100% fine and verifies perfectly. When the
same job is schedule to run at 7pm the report states that
the backup job failed because it could not mount the
media.

This morning I started the backup job manually with the
same settings and same media that failed last night and
it just completed 100%.

I'm stumped. any ideas??

Are you using Windows XP's own backup or a third party package like
Arcserve? If your using the former and it's in a business environment, you
seriously should be investing in Arcserve or Veritas (Free 90 day trial
available).

I'm using Windows' own backup application which I believe
is based mostly on a Veritas product. I have tried
Veritas Backup Exec Desktop edition but ran into the same
problem. Either the catalog corrupted or the scheduled
backup failed..

advice?
