Serious problems after XP Home System Recovery.

I had Windows XP (with the SP2 update). A couple of weeks ago, I had to do
a full system recovery due to something causing the system to reboot
itself - (happened after a small IE update).
After the recovery, I had to add the usernames back in ( 4 in total with one
being administrator and the rest having access to the internet).

I just looked at my C: drive and noticed that the original user directories
were there but also duplicates named "user1(2,3,etc.).YOUR-41DFY42M1V".
These new directories are the ones now being used by the system.
Why these? Why not the original ones?
How can I set up system to refer to original directories?

Also, whereas in the past the users could access the internet through the
setup established in the adminstrators account; now these users cannot
access the internet unless I make them administrators also? (seems that user
account setup now only gives two options - "administrator" and "limited")

This is giving me problems as I have to give the other users on my machine
full admin rights if I want them to access the internet; and the users cannot
access their old desktops.

Another note, the old "owner" directory is locked to everyone - include the
administrator.

Please help.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You might have done a full "recovery" however you should have formatted
the hd first.Sounds like recovery simply reinstalled some new files, but w/o
formatting 1st,left others intact...

I've looked into this a bit more and this is where I am:

I bought the computer from a store.
XP (SP1) was already loaded.
I set up the system as owner = user1
I added user2 and user3.
I added internet access and an ethernet hub.
user2 and user 3 were able to access internet because they were able to use
settings from owner.
each user had their own "document and settings" folder.
I loaded SP2.
recently had a continuous reboot problem.
Had to do a full system recovery.
readded owner (as user1), user2 and user3.
each user now had "document and settings" directories as owner.xxxxxx,
user1.xxxxxx and user2.xxxxxx. each directory was a complete copy of the
original "owner" directory.
I am denied access to original owner, user1 and user2 directories.
Now, I have found out that xxxxxx is the name of the computer.
Also, if I delete the user1.xxxxxx directories I can access (from owner) the
original user1 directories, but when I log back in as user1, the directories
are recreated (as copies of owner.xxxxxx) as user1.xxxxxx.

It looks like - to my simple XP mind that the OS assumes that this machine
is now a server and is creating directories as such.

What I want to do is have owner, user1 and user2 point to their original
directory structures under "document and settings" etc.

Can I do this easily?

What if I delete user1.xxxxxx directory structure and copy user1 directory
structure to user1.xxxxxx?

How can I set up the system to allow user1 and user2 to access the internet
using the settings established under owner?

Please Help.

Thanks in advance

Dave E.

This KB article may help.
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/811151

Access the Administrator in Safe Mode to make changes. You
should use the Administrator only to make changes to other
User Profiles including any having the powers / rights of an
Administrator.

Thanks for the reply Gerry.
however the post was not that helpful.

I still would like to know why only "administrator" rights can access the
internet connection that "owner" set up athough I have set up the connection
to be used by anyone. It seems that "limited" permissions do not allow users
to access the internet.

Also, why are the user directories being created as "user.xxxxxx" where
xxxxxx is the compuer/hostname. and how can I set up my system to go back to
a simpler directory structure.

thanks
Dave E.
