Serious Networking problem between desktop and laptop

Ok, so here goes...I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP SP 2 and a Dell
Inspiron 6000 running same. I have been having a problem with the desktop on
my network. When I attempt to access the desktop from the laptop I get an
error message stating that '//Jeffdell is not accessible. You may not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. The Server service is not
started.' The desktop is connected directly to a Linksys router and the
laptop connects wirelessly to the router. I have cable internet service from
Time/Warner (however the problem began quite a while ago when I had Adelphia
cable internet and a different router.) The network name is HOME NETWORK and
each computer is named individually. I have tried numerous times to set up a
network using the Windows Network Wizard utility, to no avail. The desktop
does not show up on my network neighborhood but does show up on my workgroup
computers. I am going to be going back to school in the near future and can
no longer kive with the inconvenience of not being able to access my printer
and such from my laptop. I went to PChuck's site and compiled all of the
information (I think) that was requested and pasted it below. I hope I
included everything. Should you need any further information, please email
me at (e-mail address removed) or give me a call at (814)434-0070. Thanks!

Can you ping the router for both computers?
Can you ping each computer from the other?
If not, then you need to inspect the firewall settings.

Hi Jeff,

Please start by removing IPX/SPX from JeffDell. And restart both computers.

Thanks, Chuck. I tried to uninstall the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible
Transport Protocol but was informed that it '...is still required by the
following component(s) and cannot be uninstalled until those components are
uninstalled: Service Advertising Protocol.' I just wanted to double-check
with you before uninstalling the Service Advertising Protocol. Also, I don't
know if it matters at all, but there's an NWLink NetBIOS protocol icon listed
above the IPX/SPX protocol icon.

Thanks, again.

Jim,

Unfortunately, I am not that advanced of a computer user to know how to
ping...I know what you're talking about, but unsure how to do it.

Thanks,

Chuck,

I figuered I might as well list all of the items in the Local Area
Connection Properties window in case there was something else goofy there:
Client for MS Windows (checked)
File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks (checked)
Service Advertising Protocol (checked)
Zero-Knowledge Freedom (checked) -- this has something to do with my
anti-virus program
NWLink NetBios (checked)
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transfer Protocol (checked)
Internet Protocol {TCP/IP} (checked)

Jeff,

SAP is a Novell component. Without IPX/SPX, you shouldn't need it. Ditto
NWLink NetBIOS.

Ping is the internet program which sends a message from one computer to
another. The receiving computer sends a ping reply. So, if you "ping" one
computer from another, you know that the two computers can communicate.

Ping sends packets of data across the net which conforms to the ICMP
protocol. Many other services communicate with this protocol, and among
them are those which mount remote shares.

So, if you cannot ping one computer from another, then there is no hope of
getting the two to talk. Usually, the problem comes down to improper
firewall configuration (you did not tell it to pass ICMP packets).

To run ping, proceed as follows:

Click Start
Click Run
Enter "cmd" (without the parentheses) in the run box
At the prompt, enter "Ping <remote computer name>" in which you replace
<remote computer name> with the name of the other computer

Ping will send four messages. At the end it will tell you whether it can
communicate with the remote computer and other useful data.

You should also ping the router.

Ok...uninstalled SAP and the other two NetBIOS things disappeared. Restarted
both computers. Tried to access the desktop from the laptop...same result,
except the error message ended with 'The Network path was not found.'

I forgot to add that there's a QoS Packet Scheduler (checked) in the Local
Area Connection Properties.

Jeff,

Let's look at updated "browstat status" from both computers.

Look at the error "The Network path was not found.".

Next, you'll need to look at personal firewalls and other security components.

# Check for a personal firewall problem. A misconfigured or malfunctioning
personal firewall, on either computer, can block browser access. Do you have
antivirus protection? Make sure that your antivirus is not part of a package
that contains a personal firewall, and does not contain a component that acts as
a firewall.
# Check for an anonymous access restriction. Any computer which restricts
anonymous access can't be enumerated by the browser.

Thanks for all the help...it seems like it was a mixture of a lot of things.
I reset my TCI/IP and shut down the aftermarket firewall on my desktop; now
I'm only protected by the Windows firewall. That's ok, right?

Anyway, I finally got it all figured out and can access all of my files and
printer from the laptop.

Thanks again, guys!!

Jeff,

Thanks for updating the thread. Sometimes, it will be a mixture of things.

You should be OK with Windows Firewall, if you practice layered security.

That right there was probably the problem. Turn off the piece of shit
windows firewall. then u can use your own brand. windows doesn't like
to share control with firewall programs. On Wed, 26 Apr 2006 20:59:01
