Been gone for a week and my sister has been using my computer. Now nothing
works! The computer crashes everytime I want to open a folder, the computer
doesn't re start but it goes back to how it was from the start. I can't
either access the control panel or my computer. It simply can't open any
windows it seems. What has happend and how can I fix this?

I would recomend starting the computer in safe mode w/networking by pressing
f8 at the boot screen. this will load only the basic programs needed to run
windows. Once you are in windows, go to start, then run and type msconfig,
then when the msconfig screen comes up, go to startup programs and turn off
everything you dont need, and also see if any spyware is in your start up.
After that, see if you can get to control panel and remove any unwanted
programs or malware. If you come on somthing you cannot remove, search for
it on your c drive and delete it by hand. before you reboot your computer in
normal windows mode, try and download Ad-Ware from lavasoft, update the
definitions file and run a scan of your pc. If all else fails, run a repair
using your windows cd at startup

install adaware and then get the latest definition files then scan your pc
for spy/malware
if you don't have Antivirus software get some.

Well I know there is no spyware or viruses, scanned the computer and have ad
aware. Can go on to icons I have on my taskbar which is the reason why I can
go on the internet and use Norton..
But it's just opening folders and even the recycling bin.. it loads to open
them but then It stops and the computer crashes but it doesn't restart.

I have the latest definitions and have scanned my computer.. but there is no
viruses.. or spyware. Restarted the computer with safemode and it was so nice
because it was back to normal and I could go into my folders. But in normal
mode I can't.

You need to download several anti virus and several anti spyare apps to
a new folder. Then boot to safe mode to install them and run them for
the first time. Then you need to reboot normally, run them again, get
the updates.

Apps here:

Hello, if I were in your shoes and were trying to "recover" my machine
from a week of abuse, I'd go straight to system restore and restore
it to the date just before the abuse occurred.

Can't I just use my xp cd and repair the damage? I've asked her and she said
she didn't do anything but it might be from turning of the computer the wrong
way a couple of times.

Open Control Panel-Admin Tools-Event Viewer-see if anything is listed there.
If all is well, I'd disable Norton, open Folder Options-'unhide' System Files
and turn off System Restore. Then go online to www.trendmicro.com and run
Housecall. Then I'd go to www.ewido.net, and do an online scan from them.

Once the scans complete, 'rehide' your System files, restart System Restore
and create a new Restore point.

And, by all means, set up a guest account for your sister.

Haha. She's not even using my computer again.. only reason why she used it
was because she managed to crack my password.

... and I'll try if that works.

your point about turning off the pc at the wrong time is a good one, it does
and can cause major problems, if the issue still exists, I suggest you do a
repair install, you may have to reactivate your system by calling MS

Go to www.grc.com and use the Secure Password Generator. It automatically
generates 64 character Hex or ASCII passwords for you. And every time you hit
Refresh, it generates new ones. It's GREAT.

Well I tried doing a repair install and I got to the point where you could do
it but I didn't know what to type in.
I also tried "Dr Watson" by typing in drwtsn32 an ran that program. It said
in the application errors "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe c0000094 xvid!xvid_init
(04BD026C)"

But I don't have a clue what that means.
