series of ---- becomes a line I cannot remove. How?

I have added a series of ---- just as long as a line. When I pushed <Enter>
this series became a real line which cannot be removed anymore. How can I
remove this?

Remove it immediately by pressing Undo (Ctrl-Z). Prevent it from happening
by inserting a space before pressing the Enter key.
