Serialized Printer Cartridges

I hate printer companies who try to force you to buy thier expensive
cartriges by serializing them. My wife's Lexmark 5400 series printer does
this. Evidentally, it can remember the level on the last "x" cartridges
installed, and if refilled will still show empty.
I have heard only three carts can be stored, so if you put in your refilled
one as the fourth cartridge it will show full again. Any truth to this?
any other solutions?

Some HP printers only store this information for the last two
cartridges, so the system is pretty easy to defeat. There are far more
effective systems that are just about impossible to defeat.
