Serial #

Is there a place to find out if I registered my copy of XP home?
I bought a new copy (full version) of XP home off of ebay. I tried to
install this on my Toshiba laptop as the copy of ME that came on the
computer was crashing all the time. My computer locked up and would
not take XP ( it would get so far into the install and then shut down. I
became very frustrated and went back to my Mac. I have moved in the
interim and had left the XP disk in the laptop and I can't find my serial
number. I may have registered the XP version via the web prior to the
failed install and though it may be a way to get the serial # back. I now
have need of the use of this laptop for some specific software (Windows
only) and have my computer at a shop to be fixed. They tell me that
they can't install XP without the serial number and they a putting ME
back on (this will not help me as ME will not run this specific software?)
ANY SUGGESTIONS? M. Tozer

Greetings --

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use AIDA32
Enterprise from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php to find the Product
Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and haven't since
reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably of the drive
image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product Key;
therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not be --
used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
