serial ATA and a new comp

well, it's been about a year since i did any hardware tinkering. when i
left off serial ATA was some marvelous eutopian dream, and ASUS was the
ruler of it's country. since then, serial ATA is as cheap as ATA 133 (which
is alien to me BTW) and ASUS is dropping out of the market.
so it's time to build a new comp. what's the deal? i need a whole new
system. for a mobo, i'm looking for one as bare as possible (no lan, no
audio, if that's even still possible) and probably pentium (yeach). how is
serial ATA working for those who have it? RDRAM still dominating the
pentium scene (seeing a lot of new pentium machines with DDR)? i run win2k,
any advantages to switching to XP(other than aesthetic)? DVD burners,
working well now?
anyhow, it's amazing what happens in a year. maybe the average pc buyer
doesn't care, but i do. with my 1.5 year old athlon box i'm already feeling
behind....ahh yes i remember when i was the first kid on the block with a
pentium back in 1995. oh and BTW my video card crapped out, and i need two
or five 15" LCDs if you care to be charitable (ha)

AMD is "dropping out of the market" ??
Care to elaborate?

Seeing as AMD's newest chip, the athlon 64 is THE best chip out there and
for a damn decent price, I'd hardly say they were dropping out as
such.......

the last i heard of AMD was that they were shifting their development focus
from PC processors to consumer electronics. i think i read it on slashdot,
but i can't be sure.
