Asus A8V doesn't see new serial drive

I am trying to hook up a new Western Digital 160 Serial SATA drive to a
new Asus AV8 motherboard I just purchased. I hooked up the SATA red
cable to the SATA1 on the motherboard and proper power plug to the
drive. When I power the computer it does not see the drive saying it
couldn't find harddrive, press g to continue, I used the Western
Digital software to try to find the drive and no luck. I have noticed
that when the computer is powered on the drive is not running. If I
shut down the computer and unplug ther serial plug and restart the
computer with just the power connected the drive start spinning. Is
this normal? I can get the computer to see a standard ATA drive no
problem. Can anyone give me a pointer on how to get the Asus to see
the serial SATA drive? The drive I have is a WD 1600JDRTL.

THanks in advance, this is my first time setting up a SATA drive.

Have you checked SATA is enabled in BIOS? If so, could be faulty
motherboard, faulty cable or faulty drive. Have you tried another SATA
header? Can you try HD and cable in another system?

You need to install SATA drivers from floppy disk. You should be able to
download the drivers from the ASUS web site. -Dave

The problem was transfer rate on my drive was increased to 300 which my
board can not handle, I jumped 5/6 on the hard drive and it worked
fine. I see my LAN does not work on my board, doesn't light up so I
will just put in a network card. I am not a fan of ASUS, I should have
stuck with MSI.
