sending message from outlook with an excel attachment

When sending an email from outlook to myself in outlook (so I can work on an
excel file at home) and then accessing my outlook through our webmail server
I get a message that does not include my excel file but refers to a
windata.dat file.

I'm getting around it by sending the message to myself from the webmail site
instead of from my desktop version of outlook but wanted to know if you had
any information on why I might be unable to do it the other way.

what version of Outlook and what message format are you using?
Ensure you are sending in plain text or html.
