SENDING MAIL TO CONTACTS

Guest

In Outlook Express when I sent a new email I could click on the "To" and it
would bring up my contacts which I had separated into folders/categories. In
Mail when I do this I can only see all my contacts, not the category folders
I had done. I can set up a distribution "group", but sometimes I don't want
to send email to the entire group, only select people. How can I see my
category folders when I click on the "To" or how can I just send to people in
my categories without scrolling thru hundreds of email addresses?

WM does not do folders, only groups.
what I have done but may not work for you, is to create similar groups with different people left out and labeled them accordingly.
groupxxxNOhim
groupxxxNOher
groupxxxNOthem

you get the idea.

Thanks. I did set up different groups, but sometimes I may not want to send
to everyone in that group. Can I use Outlook or Outlook Express with Vista?
I really don't like Mail.

Tina,

You may buy Microsoft Office Outlook or the entire Microsoft Office.

Unless you have used Office Outlook, you may find that you don't like it
either. I have used Office Outlook since 1995 and am familiar with most of
its functions. I also use the open source Mozilla Thunderbird and find it as
easy to use as Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Office Outlook. Each
program is different, some with more functionality than others. Some would
call Office Outlook "more sophisticated." Defined as devoid of all prior
simplicity. I currently use Windows Mail as a news reader only.

After all of that, stick with Windows Mail for a couple of weeks. You will
find it more appealing with an increase in familiarity.

Other than the changes to Contacts, I don't have any problems with Windows
Mail, but whoever decided to eliminate the use of Folders when filling the
TO/CC/BCC fields needs to rethink that change. Groups are fine if you
ALWAYS mail to everyone in a given Group, but they are useless for selecting
individual addresses. If I want to email something to select members of my
Family, I don't want to have to wade through all my Contacts to find the
ones I want. I want to go into my Family folder and select the ones I want
just like I did in Outlook Express. I've compensated somewhat by adding a
sequence number (01, 02, 03....) to my most often used Contacts, but that
still leaves a lot to be desired. BRING BACK FOLDERS!!!

Cheers, Dave

I agree - I use full Outlook at work and was using Outlook Express at home
and like the features of both. I don't see where Mail is improved - I think
it's a step backward. Dave - how did you do the sequence? Can I use Outlook
with Vista? I'd rather go back to Outlook until they decide to bring the
folders back to Mail.

Sorry, you can't use Outlook Express with Vista.
Try Thunderbird, you might like it better than WinMail.

Outlook should work on Vista but you will (In theory) have to get
another copy to comply with licensing. Windows Live Mail Desktop is very
like OE but has it's own problems and Thunderbird is almost exactly like
OE except for the sorting options that are laid out a little
differently. It is also faster for mail and newsgroups and doesn't "Lock
up" the machine when taking a long time to send like the MS Offerings
currently seem to do.

Quite honestly with the mix of what does and doesn't work between XP and
Vista these days I can see a lot of people changing to Thunderbird
simply to get all their systems "Looking" the same.

I think MS have finally blown it with email clients :)

PLEASE give us back Outlook Express. It was so much easier to use !!! Why
did Microsoft take away something that was so easy to use???

The closest you can get to OE is Thunderbird.

Tina,

I simply added a 2-digit number to a Nickname in the Nickname field (01.
Dave, 02. Jeanette, and so on). The same thing can be accomplished by
adding it to the first/last name (depending on how you view your contacts),
but using the Nickname field keeps things separate. It's not elegant and I
also did it in OE because I wanted my Top 10 to always appear whenever I
looked for addresses and that happened to fit my default window size. Now I
have a list of 20 that appear first. They are the 20 I most frequently
email and I only have to scroll 2 pages to get to most of my addressees.

Like I said, it's not elegant and won't be worthwhile if you have a large
list of favorites, but it works for me. I'm considering moving my less used
Folders to another location and moving them back when I need those
addresses, but so far things seem to work well enough. FWIW, I have a
couple of hundred contacts, but many are from groups I don't email too
often.

Cheers, Dave

I downloaded and set up Thunderbird and love it! Similar to Outlook and
much, much better than Mail! Thanks for the tip!

There goes another one :)

I think you will find it faster too, would be interesting to hear from
you when you have used it a few days.

Glad you found an email program that suits you.
Many of us are too set in our ways to try something different.

I've used it just today and am already sold. It's much faster and easier. I
run a youth football league so I have lots of email addresses - coaches,
parents, etc. that I send different types of email/notices so I really needed
more control and ease of organized contacts. Thanks again.

I don't understand the speed difference to be honest, same internet,
same servers etc but somehow faster.

Anyway, I think WLMD would suit my purposes better if they can just get
the things that need doing sorted out and never mind the eye candy,
but glad you are fixed up with something you can work with.
