sending error 0x80042109

I recently bought a new laptop and I'm having trouble sending my work emails.
I can receive them without a problem, but it gives me this error every time
it tries sending: Sending reported error (0x80042109) Outlook cannot connect
to your outgoing (SMTP) email server.
I'm using Vista, AVG and Outlook 2007.
What really surprises me is that in a recent trip I connected to the hotel's
WIFI and another public network and Outlook sent the email messages without
any problems and the configuration was exactly the same. Once I got back,
and conected my laptop at home it stopped working again. I have checked the
configuration a million times and can't find anything wrong.

First of all, if you have AVG scanning your email, DISABLE this feature.
Email scanning is NOT required for full protection and the scanning process
WILL cause problems, sooner or later. Second, is this outgoing server owned
by the ISP you're connected to?

Hal,
1. I already disconnected the Email scanning feature. However, it still
doesn't send messages.
2. No, this outgoing server is not owned by my ISP. I already talked to
them (the server) and my outgoing mail configuration is how it should be.
They said that I should contact you guys to determine the problem.

Any ideas?

And that's the likely source of the problem. Most (if not all) ISPs will
not allow you to connect to an email sending server that they do not own.
There are exceptions that use a different TCP/IP port than normal SMTP
sending uses (port 945 for example instead of port 25 which is normal) or
some form of authentication, but that's up to the SMTP server that you're
trying to use and the folks who run it would have specific instructions on
what settings are needed. Otherwise, you'll have to use your ISP's SMTP
server when you're connected to them.
