Sending email from Contacts

In Outlook 2003...

If I select a name from the Contacts list to send an email to, I get an
error message "none of your email accounts could send to this recipient".

If I type in the email address directly in the "TO" box of the message, the
email is sent without any trouble. It's only when I select the name from the
Contacts list that I get the error.

Describe the exact steps you are taking to "select a name from the Contacts list." I can think of at least two different scenarios.
