Subject: XP Pro started taking a long time to start up

Its taking longer and longer for my screen to show the XP MS logo, this
past
two weeks. At first I thought something was drastically wrong, but then it
fires up. I have nothing on my Start program, selecting what I need when
I'm
up and running after my Windows password is validated.

Running IE 6++ SP2, XP Pro, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, AVG, MS Firewall, Zone
Alarm, and compress my OE offline, daily. Run AVG daily, and Ad-Aware,
Spybot S&D about 3X/week and update each time. Just ran Penicillin House
Call and all's well.

Any ideas? This is scaring me, but I've backed up everything in ScnDisks.

Can you explain why this did not reach the NG, also? Thank you.

maybe you need to clean
up and defrag your disks.

maybe you registry is bloated
with useless keys and now is a very
large (large) file and fragmented
all over the disk.

during the suggested maintenance above
go ahead and temporarily disable all your
startups in msconfig. later you can enable
them again: start > run > msconfig > startup tab

also i would also suggest to clean out your
prefetch folder. start > run > cmd

then navigate as below:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch>del *.*
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\*.*, Are you sure (Y/N)?

type y above to proceed, then reboot, then do
the following:

a) a clean boot
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

b) run microsoft's one care
http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm

c) microsoft's pagedefrag program
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/PageDefrag.mspx

the above are suggestions that i have done
on my pc successfully. therefore i don't have
issues with recommending them to others who
are having difficulties.

however, if you are experiencing physica hardware
degredation then it would compromise the
performance of your operating system and none
of the above won't help, although they are helpful
otherwse.....

I defrag about every 60 days, even though its "not needed."

If the operations you suggest won't do any good, what then? I don't
understand.

Thank you

hello,

i didn't know you used a screen
reader so i will make my sentences
clearer.

microsoft one care program can
resolve a variety of issues like
defrag the hard disk.

depending on how busy you
use your computer, you may
need to defrag more frequently.

on the otherhand, if you rarely
used your computer, then you
could defrag once a year.

however, microsoft one care
program will take care of you
so i strongly suggest to run it.

as you may recall, i had mentioned
to you about a program called page defrag.

this little program from microsoft
defrag's the registry hive files only.

unlike the windows regular defrag that
services the hard disk and all the
files, page defrag only
focus's on the registry hive.

so to begin this project
first disable any programs
that are automatically starting.
these programs can be enabled
later and after your problems
are fixed.

to disable these startups click
on the start button and then click on
run.

then inside the run box type this word using
these letters m s c o n f i g then press
enter.

go to the start tab and check all
the boxes and then click on the
button that says disasble.

then close and reboot.

after windows restarts begin microsoft
one care by clicking this link:

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm

the one care program will take a while to scan your
computer.

afterwards, let me know that
it finished and we can do the next
step.

Didn't need to defrag but did it anyway. Nothing significant found on any
runs in any proggies. Seems to be loading a weeee bit faster (to the XP Pro
screen then it sits there).

Nothing I can recognize is on Start-Up, and nothing new in Add/Remove
Programs, et al.

Could it be because I turn off my computer at night, including the
electrical outlet??

well, a disk defrag does help.

but when you cut the power
off the operating system for
the most part can recover.

however, you should go
to microsoft.com and
download a program
called page defrag.

it's name is cleverly spelled as
p a g e d f r g

this program is specially designed
only for the hive system.

afterwards we will take another
step.
